Re-read: Alyssa Wong’s “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers” (Nightmare Magazine Issue 37)

This story was published in October 2015 and is worth reading again a year later. Originally debuting in Nightmare Magazine‘s Queer’s Destroy Horror! Special Issue, Alyssa Wong’s piece went on to win a Nebula Award for Short Fiction, and was a finalist for several awards including the Shirley Jackson Award, the Bram Stoker Award, the Locus Award. The structure of the story perfectly builds tension right until the last moment, combining horror and love seamlessly. With its shape-changers, soul suckers, and crisp, beautiful writing, this is a perfect read around Halloween.
